Membros Integrados
For the last three years I have been Visiting
Senior Fellow in European Political Economy at the European Institute of
the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) while continuing as
PEFM Research Associate of the European Studies Centre at St Antony’s College,
Oxford University. I am also an EU Steering Committee Member of the European Consortium
for Political Research (ECPR). My current teaching activities in the UK (LSE
and King’s College, London) and Portugal (NOVA) include “International
Political Economy” and “European Economics and Politics”. My research interests are European integration,
institutional change, economic reform in EMU (notably, the role of the ECB and
the EP, and national reforms) and EU and global governance. I have often taken
an interdisciplinary and/or cross-disciplinary approach, notably to the
analysis of the Euro crisis and the processes of European integration and
globalization (see example here). My broader area of research is International (and
European) Political Economy. I have been publishing my research in various
(co-)edited and co-authored books on EMU and EU governance by: Cambridge
University Press (1993, with Francesco Giavazzi); UCP Press (1996); St Martin’s
Press (1998, with Jeff Frieden and Erik Jones); EUI Press (2004, with A.
Verdun, H. Zimmermann and Chiara Zilioli); Nomos Verlag (2006, with Amy Verdun
and Hubert Zimmermann); Principia (2003, with Brian Ardy, Iain Begg and Waltraud
Schelkle); and Routledge (July 2016, with E. Jones – access book here). Recently I have also edited a special issue of the
Journal of European Integration (2015, with Erik Jones) and another one of the Journal
of Economic Policy (2016, with Simona Talani). Other articles on the above-referred topics have come
out in: Intereconomics (access
articles here), Review of European Economic Policy; South
European Society and Politics and Journal of European Integration
and in the recent handbooks on European Integration by Oxford University Press
(2012), Palgrave (2013) and Routledge (2015). I have been refereeing for: Journal of Common Market Studies, Political
Studies, South European Society and Politics, Review of International Political Economy, Journal of European Integration, LEQS – LSE Paper Series, Economics:
The Open-Access, Open-Assessment E-Journal,
McGraw-Hill, Palgrave, among others. More recently, I have been working with Annette
Bongardt on EMU and Structural Reform (presented at a conference on the ECB
that I co-organized at King’s College London, forthcoming in Europe in
Crisis: a Structural Analysis, Palgrave 2016), and on EMU as a Sustainable
Currency Area (presented at a conference in honour of Mike Artis organized by
the EUI in Florence in June 2016, forthcoming in The Euro and the Crisis, Springer Verlag 2017). I have also
presented my most recent work at the LSE, Nova SBE, Kings College London and
the EUI-Florence and at the universities of Oxford, Évora, Trento, and Salzburg. Annette and I have been
working jointly on a broader concept of sustainability (see example here), on economic reform, on the euro crisis, on EU
environmental policy and on the ‘optimal size’ of a Union (the EU and EMU) – we
have just co-authored “The Political Economy of Brexit” (Intereconomics, July 2016)
and have been working on the model of European integration and the optimal size
of EMU and the EU.
